The Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University seeks to make a full-time professorial appointment in Contemporary Islamic Thought and Life to be jointly situated in the Committee on the Study of Religion and the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations. We strongly favor making a senior appointment, but we would also consider exceptionally qualified candidates at the assistant or associate level. The anticipated start date for this position is July 1, 2008.
The candidate should demonstrate a deep understanding of the intellectual and religious discourses of one or more contemporary Muslim societies in their cultural, social, political, and historical contexts. We understand religious and intellectual discourses in the broadest sense, including, but not limited to, contemporary literature, theology, ritual, ethics, political thought, and social practice. The candidate should have high proficiency in using relevant contemporary and historical texts, including foundational texts of the Islamic tradition, in their original languages.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach both undergraduate and graduate students and to participate in the broader religious studies and Islamic studies communities at Harvard.
