This talk will look at how Anglo-Muhammadan law came to be in British India and the function it played in the larger project of colonial governance. It will also analyze specific court cases to demonstrate the scope of Islamic law within the courtroom and the role that Muslim jurists played. Finally it will end with some remarks on other codification projects, namely the parallel one undertaken in the Ottoman Empire, and efforts being made towards the codification of Islamic law today.
